Irony

I had to laugh when we were visiting our friends the Todd's this last weekend and we went to play at this really great park. I totally wasn't expecting to be greeted with a sign like this! Isn't it nuts that the Californians just passed a law to give farm chickens more room to stretch their legs but they can't provided safe parks for their children. I personally am all for the hunting down and extinction of rattlesnakes.
When Dave and I were in undergrad we had a rattle snake experience. We had just gone to bed and I head a strange noise. I told Dave to be quiet and listen. I told him I thought it sounded like a rattle snake. We deliberated for a moment and then went to check. You kind of have to know if you have a dangerous snake living in your front yard. What if it bit little 1 year old Chase the next day while he was playing in his sandbox. So we went outside and sure enough our brave nutso cat Chewy had a rattle snake cornered against the house. We went in to call animal control. They told us they couldn't come out until tomorrow. I looked at Dave and said no way. I am NOT going to bed tonight only to have him hide somewhere and never know if my yard is safe. So he went to get our neighbors and plotted the poor snakes death. I stood there with the hose spraying cold water on him (it makes snakes lethargic) and Dave and our friend Scott Cook went about decapitating him with a shovel from as far away as possible. That crazy snake put up the craziest fight. And it really was scary. But so much better than the alternative of never knowing...
Anyway I thought the sign would make you laugh...

And we had about 300 in our yard when we lived on Sumter road. In fact, we often saw the animal control people releasing them ride up the road from us...

Thanks again for such an enjoyable morning...it was so great to see you all! Funny story about the rattlesnake too:)

The sign has nothing on your story--way more funny to picture you spraying a snake with cold water while two grown men chop off its head with a shovel. Love it. Way to protect your son!

Reminds me of the old Arizona days! We often had one on our front porch (there must have been a slight air leak under the door that it liked to cool/warm itself by... but we could never find it). We were always having it removed... animal control came once in a while, but usually they sent the fire department... too funny! Guess they never released our little friend far enough away because we repeated this scene about every two months. Oh, the memories....

I HATE snakes and have never liked going in long grass because I just imagine one waiting for me to walk in there. I am glad for the tip of cold water, but mostly I am just happy to live in Washington and not have to worry about snakes.

I'm all for KILLING them!! When one of my nephews was a baby he got bit on the hand by a baby rattlesnake (which release ALL there venom). He got a crazy amount of anti-venom shots that cost a TON of $$$. My brother chopped the snakes head off with a shovel too!!

I sit and read this with my mouth hanging open in complete shock. This story is unreal!!! You have the funnest (and scariest/craziest) experiences! I wish I had a great story like this to share. (I wouldn't have waited for animal control either... the next day? I don't think so!)
